Tomato: The New Superfood

What if I told you there’s a fat-free food that’s not only juicy and delicious, it also keeps your skin from getting sun damage? You know — it prevents wrinkles, dry skin, aging, and oh yeah, the killer threat from the sun, skin cancer?

Sound too good to be true? Well, guess what. It’s true. And it’s a food you’ve probably loved since you were a kid … the tomato!

The sun, as we all know, accelerates aging and gives you unsightly fine lines, moles and wrinkles that make you look 45 when you’re really 37. You DON’T want sun damage.

Lycopene, one of the main compounds in tomato, is proven to reduce sun damage. A study by the Dermatology Consulting Institute compared two test subjects: one group took lycopene supplements every day for 10 weeks; the other group took a placebo. No one knew which group they were in.

At the end of 10 weeks, the group taking lycopene supplements had only 1/3 as many sunburn cells as the control group. The study, by the way, was appropriately titled ?Enjoying Your Day in the Sun: Defending Skin From the Inside Out? — which, incidentally, is the mission of this blog (beauty from the inside-out).

Of course, this isn’t a free pass from doing all the usual stuff to protect from pesky wrinkle-rays: wear SPF 30 everyday. Cover up with sleeves if you’ll be outdoors for a long time. Sit in the shade when you’re at the pool. Wear a hat and sunglasses.

And when you’re grilling in the backyard this summer — standing in the shade wearing SPF 30+ — don’t forget to load your pizza, salads and burgers with juicy tomatoes.

Thanks to the Makeup and Beauty Blog for informing me about the health benefits of tomatoes!
