New Year … New Parties!

By Kennedi Rose / January 4, 2013

Happy New Years! This blog focuses on beauty on a budget, but I want to take a second to address an issue that’s often on my mind: how can I party for an affordable price? After all, there’s no point in investing in cocktail dresses, fake eyelashes and smoky nighttime eyeshadow if you don’t have anywhere to wear it out to.

To be clear: when I say “party,” I’m not implying that you should get drunk and stumble around on your stiletto heels. (To the contrary, alcohol causes you to gain weight, particularly belly fat. Your liver is so busy processing the alcohol that it can’t properly burn calories from fat, which tend to get stored in your stomach area. Hence the “beer belly.” Ugh.)

No — I’m talking about going out with your friends (or staying in with your friends), dressing up, looking great, snacking on veggies, maybe having ONE cocktail or fruity virgin drink, and having fun. I’m talking about having a chance to wear your awesome “nighttime” clothes and makeup, without spending hundreds of dollars on cover charges, fancy meals or overpriced drinks.

How can you party for an affordable price? Here are a few ideas:

  • Invite people to your house. It’s cheaper than going out.
  • Make it clear you’re throwing a ‘dress-up’ party.
  • Have a theme, like 1920’s-era flapper.
  • Have board games, like Monopoly or Clue.
  • Play online games, like
  • Designate one room for children to play in. That way no one has to hire a babysitter.
  • Serve “group” foods like turkey chili with low-fat cheese, which can simmer in a pot all day and doesn’t require special heating or serving
  • Ask friends to bring a bottle of wine, beer or cocktail mix
  • Play music on the iPod, or — if you don’t own much music — play Pandora Internet Radio, which is free and has a bunch of stations that play party-style dance music
