Lower Your Taxes With a Charity Donation

By Kennedi Rose / April 4, 2012

A great way to lower your taxes is by giving money to charity. And while it’s too late to lower the bill you’re about to pay (this year’s tax deadline hits in less than 2 weeks!), you can start thinking about lowering the check that you’ll write in one year.

Since this is a blog about beauty on a budget, and most readers are women, I picked a few women-friendly charities that let you make tax-deductible donations.

V-Day – Ever see the play The Vagina Monologues? That’s thanks to V-Day, a charity working in 81 countries to prevent violence against women and girls. vday.org

Women’s Funding Network — This is a network of charities that support women and children. You give your money to the network and dispurse it among the many small organizations under its umbrella, so you get to help several charities at once. The network also monitors the efficiency of each charity. fundforward.org

International AIDS Vaccine Initiative — In many countries around the world, women don’t have the power to abstain from forced sex with their husbands, nor do they have the power to demand that their partners wear a condom. Those men pass HIV/AIDS onto the women. The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative sponsors research for an HIV/AIDS vaccine, which would allow women to protect themselves. iavi.org

The Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation – This charity has donated $2 billion to research for find a breast cancer cure, as well as breast cancer advocacy and services. It was named after an Illinois woman who died of breast cancer at age 36. This group has become controversial, though, since Susan G. Koman Foundation donates some of their money to Planned Parenthood. I’m not taking a stand on that issue … I just thought you should be aware of that fact.
