Healthy eating is something that everyone aims to follow, but rarely anyone does – eating healthy needs you to be mindful of what you put in your body. With a busy schedule, leading a healthy lifestyle needs some planning.
One of the ways we manage to eat healthily is by batch cooking and freezing the food to have easy access throughout the week. I have talked about buying fresh ingredients instead of frozen one-time meals because they tend to be cheaper and also fresher.
Another reason is that not everything stays good when frozen. Let’s talk about two of the most common healthy food options that don?t do well when frozen.
1. Salad Greens
If you buy the ready-made salad servings, then the chances are that you are not going to be able to finish the whole bowl in a single sitting. What do you do then? You will put it back in the fridge?.
You cannot freeze salad, so it is not going to maintain its integrity if you put it in the freezer to help it stay fresh as you do with other food items. The water content in a salad is high, especially if it has a lot of greens. This can lead to freezer burn, and it renders the salad inedible.
Although some of the vegetables that are used for salads can be frozen, it is not a good idea to use them to make a salad. Use them for cooking but not for salad.
2. Yogurt
When talking about quick and healthy breakfast alternatives for busy mornings, one of the items I mentioned was yogurt. Not all kinds of yogurt can be frozen. I would suggest not freezing them at all. Especially, thinner yogurts – they tend to separate and become watery, and they even develop an acidic taste.
If you really want to freeze yogurt, then getting a full-fat one is your best bet. It will be able to hold better, but it will still lose the smooth, creamy texture once it defrosts.?
This will make you think, why is that so if frozen yogurt exists. Well, the reason is that frozen yogurt is made in a special way that stops the water from crystallizing, which is why you can?t make frozen yogurt at home, at least not as good as what you can buy.
Final Thoughts
While freezing things makes our lives easier. It is better to keep some things out of the freezer. There’s no point in freezing something if it is going to destroy the integrity of it.
