Why You Should NOT Wash Your Hair Everyday

I get complimented on my hair all the time. One of the reasons I get compliments (I think) is because I always have my hair styled when I leave the house. Because I have a short hairstyle, I also get my hair cut every 6 weeks so it never starts look frizzy or overgrown. I love getting complimented on my hair, especially on the days that I rock “dirty hair”.

Yes, that’s right. I don’t wash my hair every day. In fact, I strive to only wash my hair 3 days each week. But don’t worry, I still shower on the days I don’t wash my hair. πŸ™‚

There are numerous benefits to be had by not washing your hair every day. Here are just a few of them.

It Saves Money

As you all know, I got my start in the personal finance realm of blogging, so I wouldn’t be doing my background any justice if I didn’t tell you about the money savings behind not washing your hair every day. πŸ™‚ By not washing your hair daily, you will be saving shampoo and conditioner each bottle will last you much longer. Plus you’ll be saving (hot) water which will cut down on your utility bills at the end of the month too.

Another way you save money by not washing your hair every day is by not having to re-color your hair as often. Getting your hair colored professionally is very expensive. Of course, it’s cheaper if you DIY it, but even then it can be an expensive habit if you have to touch-up your color every few weeks. Luckily, hair color lasts longer if you don’t wash your hair daily. This might be enough to let you stretch your coloring appointments a few more days, which could cut out a couple of hair appointments over the course of a year.

Hair is Healthier

Both your scalp and your hair will be healthier if you don’t shampoo your hair daily. Shampooing your hair everyday dries out your scalp and strips your hair of its natural oils. Think about how dry your hands get in the winter, especially if you are constantly washing them. The same concept applies to your scalp since it too is made of skin cells. I used to suffer from a dry, flaky scalp, but ever since I stopped washing my hair daily, it has gotten much better.

It Saves Time

I’m not a morning person at all, so if I can find a way to shave just a few minutes off my daily routine, I’m all for it. Instead of washing my hair every day, I only wash it on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (usually). This means on Tuesday, Thursday, and the weekend, I get to sleep in for a few more minutes.

Hair Styles Better

I haven’t done a scientific study to prove this for sure, but I do seem to get more compliments on my hair style when it’s dirty than when it’s clean. The days I like my hair style better are the “off” days when I haven’t washed my hair. It seems to have more volume and body, plus it holds curl and texture better when it’s a little dirty.

It’s Green

By not washing your hair every day, you are conserving more water too. Shorter showers are good for the environment, and I don’t know about you, but the majority of my shower time is usually spent washing, conditioning, and thoroughly rinsing my hair.
