Here’s a guest post written by Melissa, a woman who makes money selling crafts like jewelry and soaps online. She has lots of tips about how to start any online business you want! You could sell homemade perfume, makeup, jewelry, or even become a nail polish distributor … the sky is the limit! I hope you enjoy her post!
A couple of years ago, I made some soaps to give to my family for Christmas. Even though the soaps were pretty unimpressive and crumbled easily, my family loved them. I had a lot of fun making them too, so I decided to start making soaps and selling them online. I love making things, and I’ve since started making and selling jewelry as well.
My little e-commerce business has actually taken off, which means that I have a lot of work to do every week. Through the success of my hobby, I’ve learned a lot about inventory management and order management that I never knew before. I feel like a business expert some days, and other days I feel like I need to go back to school to learn more about the business world.
Although it’s challenging, I highly recommend that other crafty women and men enter the online business space and make some money selling things they love to make. In this economy, many of us have to carve out niches for ourselves and find creative ways to pay the bills.
So, if you’re thinking about entering the e-commerce world, prepare yourself for a challenging and rewarding ride. Here are three tips for aspiring e-commerce merchants to help make your lives easier:
# 1: Find the right shopping cart software for your website. This is extremely crucial. Customers are far less likely to buy your products if doing so is difficult. Make sure the shopping cart you choose provides a fast and efficient shopping experience for your customers. Buyers really appreciate knowing the shipping costs before they pay, so invest in a shopping cart that will provide them with this information.
#2: Do some simple things to market your store and your products. Something like posting pictures of new products on your Facebook will encourage family and friends to check out your store and potentially buy things from you. You can also work on your customer service and add a spot on your website for customers to leave reviews. If people interested in whatever you’re selling see you have good reviews, they’ll be more likely to buy from you.
#3: Seriously consider paying a little for some inventory management and order management software. This software will help you keep track of all your products and orders easily. You’re going to want to make sure that you always get customer orders right and you always know what you have in stock. If you start selling a lot of products, it can become difficult to keep track of things without a little help.
So, find the right shopping cart, use Facebook to your advantage, and manage your store efficiently with the right software. If you do, you’ll be well on your way to success!
